Projects & Workspaces
Organize translations into projects: manage target languages, handle duplicate repositories, archive or delete projects, and collaborate with your team.
Projects are the core unit in Babelize. Each project connects to a GitHub repository or an uploaded ZIP archive and manages translations for that codebase.
Projects
What's in a Project
- A GitHub repository and branch, or an uploaded ZIP archive
- Source language (detected when you create the project)
- Target languages (add anytime)
- Babel history and results
- Team access and permissions
Creating a Project
Click New Project. The wizard has three steps:
- Import. Connect GitHub the first time: one connection, through the Babelize GitHub App, covers reading your code and opening pull requests. Then switch between your account and organizations, search, and click Import next to the repository. To add another organization, choose Connect an organization in the account menu and pick its repositories on GitHub. You can also paste a public repo URL (no connection needed) or upload a ZIP of your project (max 50 MB)
- Configure. Babelize shows the framework, i18n library and existing languages it found. Pick the branch to translate and check the language your app is written in. The languages you already ship are pre-selected; add more, or start from a preset (Top 5 markets, Europe, Asia)
- Review. Check the cost line, then click Create project. For GitHub projects on the Growth and Studio plans, Keep translating when I push turns on Auto-localize (on by default)
Creating a project doesn't start translating. Click Babelize on the project page when you're ready to start the first babel. Babels on different projects can run at the same time; each project runs one babel at a time.
The project is named after the repository; rename it any time in its settings.
Drafts. Click Save as draft on any step to finish later. Unfinished drafts are listed under Continue a draft on the first step. You can keep up to 10, they're removed after 30 days, and they don't count toward your project limit.
GitHub projects receive translations as pull requests; ZIP projects download the translated project.
Project Settings
Click Configure on the project page:
- General: name, branch, the translation cache, and Formats (localize hardcoded dates, prices and numbers)
- Languages: what you translate from and into
- Advanced: the translation service (Automatic, Babelize, or your own key). See Bring Your Own Key
Changing the branch (admins only) starts the project over: the next babel scans and translates everything again (using credits for every string), and the current pull request is unlinked. It stays open on GitHub.
Project Limits
| Plan | Active Projects |
|---|---|
| Free | 5 |
| Starter | Unlimited |
| Growth | Unlimited |
| Studio | Unlimited |
Managing Languages
Add target languages at any time:
- Open the project
- Click Configure → Languages
- Pick languages under Add languages
- Click Save changes
The next babel translates the existing text into the new languages. Only admins can remove languages.
Duplicate Repositories
When you import a repository that's already one of your projects, Babelize offers:
- Open existing project — opens it
- Start over with these languages — keeps the project, your usage and credits, but removes its translations and history and sets it up with the languages you picked
Archiving vs. Deleting
| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Archive | Moved to the Archived tab under Projects; translations and history are kept, and you can restore it any time |
| Delete | Permanent: the project, its babels and files are removed and can't be restored |
